The perennial inability to get or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse is called erectile dysfunction (also known as male impotence). The word "male impotence" may also refer to other problems that intervene with sexual intercourse and reproduction, for instance lack of sexual desire and disorders with ejaculation or orgasm. Using the term erectile dysfunction makes it clear that those other disorders are not involved. Some males experience chronic erectile dysfunction, and others have a partial inability to attain and maintain an erection. Regular ED can bring on emotional and relationship disorders, and often leads to diminished self-esteem and confidence. These variations make defining the health problem and estimating its incidence hard. Estimates vary from 15 to 30 mln, depending on the definition used. The majority of male sexualproblems are caused by physical factors, for instance blood vessel, neurological and abnormalities in the penile area. In older males, ED usually has a physical cause, for instance diseases, injuries, or side effects of medications. Any disorder that impairs penile nerves and blood vessels can bring on ED. Incidence raises with age: about 5% of 40-year-olds and 15-25% of 65-year-olds suffer from ED. Still, it is not an irrevocable aspect of aging. Being unable to perform in bed adversely impacts on man's self-esteem and confidence. Besides, it also severely damages his relationship with a partner. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1, 000 men in the United States, 7.7 appointments with a medical practitioner were made for ED in 1985. By 1999, that number had nearly tripled. The increase occurred gradually, probably as therapies, such as vacuum devices and injectable medications became more easily available and discussing erectile function became accepted. On the whole, ED is treatable regardless of age, and awareness of this fact has been increasing. Nowadays more men search for specialist aid and return to normal sex life because of advanced, successful therapies for ED. There are oral, mechanical, injection and surgery therapies. One of the ways to better ED is to make some simple life-style changes. For some men, selecting a healthier lifestyle, for instance quitting smoking, doing regular exercise, and relieving tension, may be all that is required to find relief. For those who require more intensive treatment, lifestyle changes along with other treatments can further help.
